Using Hand Trucks Prevents Injuries

January 07, 2013

Hand trucks are an invaluable asset to moving items in the workplace.  Not only does it make the job quicker and easier, but using a truck can sidestep back strain and injuries that may arise transporting heavy and/or multiple loads.  Here are some tips regarding the use and safety of hand trucks:

  • First be sure to examine the hand truck for any defects.  Loose parts and/or damaged wheels can tip the load during transport and result in either injury, damaged goods, or both.
  • Load the heaviest object first to properly balance the cargo.  Avoid having objects protrude over the edges.
  • If the load is heavy and you are straining to transport the load using the truck, divide the load into smaller bundles. Or, if you have a convertible hand truck such as Mutual's 2-in-1 Hand Truck, you can easily convert the truck from an upright to a platform position to carry a larger load.
  • When transporting, push the load in front of you (do not pull the load).  And unless you need to maneuver into a tight space, avoid walking backward.

Remember to use the truck for its intended purpose. Improper use of even a top-quality hand truck can lead to injury.
