Put the Freeze on Burns in the Workplace

According to OSHA, work related fires and/or explosions account for more than 5,000 burn injuries every year. To reduce this risk, examine the workplace for potential causes of burns and put measures in place to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of injury to workers. Below is a list of steps that can be taken to reduce the incidence of fire-related burns in the workplace:

• Keep sparks and/or flames away from flammable or combustible materials
• Frequently check to be sure debris is not accumulating the in work area as this can be a source of ignition 
• Wear flame resistant and flame retardant clothing
• Exercise caution when working with or near heat - this includes hot liquids, steam, flames, flash and hot surfaces. Reduce exposure when possible
• If unsure whether is equipment is hot or not, be sure to wear the proper protective equipment prior to approaching or handling the machinery
